有妈妈说上一期选的精读书内容太沉重了,所以呢,今天我特地选了一本可爱的绘本“Lily's Purple Plastic Purse",中文版叫《莉莉的紫色小皮包》,这本书呢曾经得过如Notable Children's Books等诸多大奖,今天面条妈我就用这本来介绍阅读理解教学里的第三个知识点,Character,即人物
毫无疑问,从书名就能看出这本书的Main Character即主角,就是这只可爱的小Lily啦,那Lily是个什么样的小老鼠,在这本书里Lily有怎样的故事呢?
阅读的时候有一个很关键的步骤是Visualization,好的描写能让你很有画面感,人物鲜活的跃然于纸上。从人物的外在描写,譬如他很年轻很高,有一头金色的头发,穿着白色的毛衣蓝色的裤子,戴着红色的眼镜,背着红书包,你能大致勾勒出他的模样。
而更深层次的,他是怎样的一个人,则是从情节描述里他的动作Action、语言Words、想法Thoughts、感受Feeling等方面能感受到,譬如他是一个helpful、competitive、generous、kind的人,亦或是一个careless、mean的人。其实我们在生活中遇到一个新的朋友,对他对了解又何不是这样建立起来的呢?
为了方便,北美的老师会让小朋友记住“STEAL”这个词,就像我们之前第一篇讲作者的写作目的(面条妈带你来精读,原来在北美,孩子的阅读理解是这样教(一)Author's Purpose) 用的PIE一样
Physical Traits比较浅显,今天我主要来说一说Personality Traits,让我们选几页“Lily's Purple Plastic Purse”这本书的内页来一起看一看
故事的开始,莉莉好喜欢上学,喜欢任何和学校有关的事情,不过,她最喜欢的还是Slinger老师。Mr. Slinger很时髦,他会把无聊的课程变的有趣,Mr. Slinger简直就是她的偶像,莉莉长大后也想像他一样当老师。大家来和这位Mr.Slinger打个招呼吧
在这页描述Lily多喜欢上学的页,请小朋友来看看Lily有什么Action行动,Thoughts想法和Feeling感受
Lily's Action: Eating Lunch 吃午餐
Thought: Loves fish sticksand chocolate milk
Feeling: Happy,很快乐
这一切在有一天发生了变化。周末,莉莉和奶奶一起去逛街,买了太阳眼镜、亮晶晶的硬币,但她觉得最棒的是一打开就会唱歌的紫色小皮包。星期一莉莉高兴地带着它们去上课,莉莉很想拿给大家看,但现在是上课时间,老师让她等一等。
Lily's Action:Raised her hand 举着手
Thought: She can't wait, she wants to show her new things. 她等不及想要给同学看
Feeling: Impatient 好着急没耐心再等了
莉莉还是没忍住,把包包打开给大家看。Mr. Slinger不高兴了,他把莉莉的东西收在抽屉,说要等到放学的时候才会还给她。那天下午,莉莉在亮光实验室画了一张丑化Mr.Slinger的画像,偷偷塞进他的包。
Lily's Action:Drew a picture of Mr. Slinger 画了一张丑化老师的画
Thought: She wants her purse back. 她想要拿回她的紫色包包
Feeling: Angry 好生气啊
放学前,Mr.Slinger将东西还给了莉莉,回家路上莉莉打开紫色皮包,发现除了眼镜和硬币,还有Mr.Slinger的纸条及一包小点心。莉莉很后悔,跑回家把所有事情告诉了爸爸妈妈。
Lily’s Action: Sat in uncooperative chair 坐在一张怎么都觉得变扭的椅子上
Thought: Wishes she hadn’t drawn a mean picture. 真希望自己没有画那张画
Feeling: Guilty 好有负罪感
晚上她又画了一张Mr.Slinger的画像,妈妈写了纸条,爸爸烤了点心,让莉莉第二天带去学校。一大早莉莉就去学校向老师道歉,得到了老师的原谅,莉莉也在分享时间给大家看了她的眼镜、硬币及紫色小皮包。
Lily’s Action: Says she’s sorry 和老师说对不起
Thought: Wants Mr. Slinger to forgive her. 希望老师原谅她
Feeling: Guilty 觉得很后悔很自责
通过这样的分析,小朋友是不是对Lily的认识更深入了呢?可以用类似这样的图让小朋友来推断下Lily是个什么样的小老鼠
Mix Lilly’s actions, thoughts, and feelings together to figure out her personality. I thinkshe is: • Cheerful • Attention seeking • Easily upset • Forgiving
粑粑麻麻也可以让小朋友把Lily的Physical Traits和Personality Traits 画在一起
粑粑麻麻还可以告诉小朋友,每本书的人物个性描写会不同,有的人物是Flat扁平的,有的人物是Round立体的,小朋友觉得Lily的Personalilty Traits在故事里是如何变化的呢?

Why did Mr. Slinger take away Lilly’s beautiful purse?
Why did Lilly get angry with Mr. Slinger?
What do you think Mr. Slinger thought and did when he opened his bookbag and found the mean picture that Lilly drew of him?
“‘I do not want to be a teacher when I grow up,’ Lilly said as she marched out of the classroom.” Why did she change her mind when she got outside?
Why does Lilly put herself in the uncooperative chair? How does it help her?
Lilly’s father bakes tasty No-Frills Cheese Balls for Lilly to take to school. Why doeshe do that? Her mother writes a note to Mr. Slinger, though the contents arenever revealed to us. What do you think her note said?
How does Lilly apologize to Mr. Slinger for her behavior?
What would have happened if Lilly had not apologized to Mr. Slinger?
除了就书内容本身的讨论和分析,在北美的阅读教学里还有很重要的一个环节,Making Connections,让书和小朋友的实际生活联系起来。读了这本书,粑粑麻麻可以和小朋友试着讨论:
How have you apologized or made amends when you've done something wrong? What did you say?
What is the best apology you ever gave? How did you feel afterward? What is the best apology you ever received? How did you forgive that person? How did you feel afterward?
粑粑麻麻还可以衍生一下写作方面的练习,譬如:
还记得故事里有一页,Lily说长大了她想做一个舞蹈家、一个外科医生、一个救护车司机、潜水员等等么,也可以让小朋友选一个梦想,参照如下试着来写一首自己的小诗:
I wish I were a diva (tell what)
Standing on an opera stage (tell where)
Singing a beautiful song (doing what)
Hitting high notes with the orchestra (tell how)
