English textbooks have gone through dramatic changes since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
建国70年以来,中国的英语教育经历了曲折的变化。在其变化过程中,教材作为实施英语教学的主要媒介,也随着时代的变化而变化。
1. 1949-1976
For older generations in China, the primary foreign language they were familiar with was usually not English, but Russian.
在许多老一辈国人的印象中,他们熟知的第一外语并非英语,而是俄语。
In the early years of People's Republic of China, China learned from the former Soviet Union and developed its own educational system. English was still taught in some secondary schools, but Russian was the preferred language.
新中国成立后,我国借鉴前苏联教育经验,发展新中国的教育事业。英语仍然在普通中学继续开授,但是俄语力压英语。
At that time, most secondary schools actively promoted Russian language, and English was temporarily taught in some schools only if there were no resources to teach Russian.
根据当时的教育计划,中学积极推进俄语教育,英语只在不具备俄语条件下暂时教授。
1956年,周恩来总理指出:“必须扩大外国语的教学,必须扩大外国重要书籍的翻译工作。”
当年7月,教育部决定由人民教育出版社出版初中、高中英语教材,其部分内容为前苏联中学英语教材。其中,谴责资本主义种族歧视以及拜金主义价值观的文章是政治主题的一大类型。

1961年,教育部颁发了《全日制中学英语教学方案》(草案),方案主张课本应包含有关英语国家的风俗,包含更多的寓言、简短故事、神话及原版作品的选段。
在上级指导下,英语教育专家对英语教材进行选编。在此期间,由许国璋主编的《英语》是最有影响力的精读教材。该教材题材与体裁多样化,重视基本功的练习。
