Iran's World Cup qualifier against Cambodia on Thursday will undoubtedly be a historic match for the country, as women will be able to enter a football stadium for the first time in decades, after FIFA threatened to suspend the Islamic republic over its controversial male-only policy. The first batch of 3,500 tickets allocated to female fans were reportedly sold out in less than one hour, resulting in an additional 1,100 put on sale for the match at the national Azadi Stadium. The policy shift came not long after 29-year-old Sahar Khodayari, dubbed "blue girl" because of the team she supported, set herself alight outside a Tehran court upon learning she could be imprisoned for trying to attend a football match disguised as a man. Though not written into law, Iran has put in place the ban on women accessing all sorts of sports stadiums fsince the 1979 Islamic Revolution, with clerics suggesting women must be shielded from the masculine atmosphere and sight of semi-clad men.
