　　The tragic demise of two kingfishers has been uncovered - but they make a beautiful spectacle.

　　A priest uncovered the birds, which had frozen as they plunged into a pond to catch fish.

　　They were perfectly preserved in a diving position by the ice in Weisendorf, in northern Bavaria.

　　Foresters were able to saw the blocks of ice containing the birds from the pond in which they were found.

　　Local forestry director Peter Proebstle said he was astonished at the discovery, and that he had never seen anything like it before.

　　It is assumed that either they could no longer find the exit while underwater, or the hole froze over quickly.

　　Mr Proebstle said: ’This is, of course, tragic, but also a bizarre and somehow beautiful sight.’

　　The forestry director speculated that the German name for the bird "Eisvogel" (ice bird) might have originated from the bird being found in such situations in the past.

　　There are 90 species of kingfisher worldwide. The ones discovered in Bavaria are believed to be common kingfishers of the type occasionally glimpsed hunting in British rivers and lakes.
